🌟 Editor's Note
Barry Schwartz's weekly recap had a lot going on this time. Here's what's actually worth your attention.

TL;DR: Google had a genuinely chaotic week — wild ranking swings, growing evidence Reddit gets special treatment in results, and a leadership shakeup in search and ads. None of it means your site is broken.

📉 Your Rankings Are Swinging. Don't Touch Anything Yet.

This week brought some of the most aggressive ranking volatility we've seen in a while. Not the usual daily noise — bigger swings, across more sites.

When volatility spikes like this, it usually means one of two things: Google is testing an unconfirmed update, or the core ranking systems are getting tuned in the background. Either way, this is a "pencils down" moment.

If your traffic moved this week and you didn't touch your site, resist the urge to start making changes. Wait for the dust to settle before you assume something's wrong.

🔎 Is Google Giving Reddit Special Treatment?

There's growing evidence — and a growing amount of frustration — that Google is favoring Reddit and other forum content in search results, beyond what a normal ranking algorithm would produce on its own.

The open question is why. Is Reddit genuinely earning that visibility, or is this the result of data-sharing deals between Google and Reddit that skip the usual ranking process?

Either way, if you run a niche site, you're not just competing with other publishers anymore. You're competing with a platform Google appears to be putting a thumb on the scale for.

👔 Google Just Reshuffled Its Search and Ads Leadership

Major leadership changes are underway inside Google's search and ads divisions. Shakeups at this level usually aren't cosmetic — they tend to come right before a shift in product direction.

Worth watching in the coming months: whether this changes how aggressively Google rolls out AI Overviews, or how it balances monetization against organic results. New leadership usually means new priorities.

⚡ Quick Hits

  • Local search updates: Google Business Profile and local rankings saw smaller tweaks this week — easy to miss with everything else going on, but this is where a lot of day-to-day local SEO work actually happens.

  • Search Console and tools: Barry also flagged reporting bugs and tool updates in Search Console. Worth remembering: a scary-looking drop in GSC isn't always a real ranking drop.

Did your rankings swing this week without you changing anything? Tell me what you saw — I'm comparing notes with readers to see how widespread this actually is.

Did You Know? A ranking drop in Search Console can look identical to a Search Console reporting bug — the graph tells the same story either way, which is exactly why Barry's weekly recaps spend time separating "Google is broken" from "your site is down."

One thing I'm thinking about: weeks like this are a good reminder that the algorithm and the org chart aren't separate stories. New leadership at Google search and ads tends to show up in the product a few months later, not immediately.

So the volatility we're seeing right now might just be noise — or it might be the first ripple of decisions that haven't been announced yet. Worth watching either way, not worth panicking over.

Till next time,
