Your content still needs to rank well enough to even be considered. But being considered and being cited turn out to be two very different things.

It helps to think of AI-powered search as a pipeline with four stages your content has to clear before it ever gets quoted.
Availability and indexability — can the AI even discover, access, and process the page?
Candidate page selection — is the page relevant and credible enough to be considered as a source?
Passage selection — which specific section actually answers the question being asked?
Answer assembly and attribution — is that passage clear and reliable enough to make it into the final response?
Traditional SEO focuses almost entirely on the first two stages. GEO is really about what happens after your page gets selected as potential source material.
Why Page Context Still Matters
AI-generated responses often quote one specific passage, not a whole page. But that passage doesn't exist in isolation.
Google has said that chunking content into smaller pages isn't a real GEO strategy. Its systems can already find the relevant section inside a long, well-structured page on their own.
The surrounding context is what helps AI systems trust a single paragraph enough to cite it in the first place.

One thing I'm thinking about: GEO isn't a replacement for SEO, it's an additional layer on top of it. The technical foundation still has to be there, or none of this even gets considered.
But the fact that AI systems now cite specific passages instead of whole pages changes what "good content" actually means. It's not enough to rank anymore. You have to be quotable.
